Nuovo Cinema Amude:
The Cinema of Amude
The city of Amude has a population of just over 56,000 inhabitants, primarily Kurds, along with a large Arab minority and a significant Assyrian community.
The only cinema in the region was destroyed in a tragic fire in 1960, an event that is deeply etched in the memory of Kurdish society. On November 13, 1960, hundreds of students were taken to the city’s sole cinema, the Şehrazad, to watch the Egyptian film “The Ghost of Midnight.” The Ba’athist regime had declared a “week of solidarity” in support of Algeria’s struggle for independence from France and mandated that students contribute by attending the screening.
The film had been shown multiple times before and drew large crowds, but that day, over 400 children filled the auditorium, which had a maximum capacity of 200 seats (the room measured around 130 square meters). During the screening, flames suddenly erupted, quickly spreading to the wooden truss of the building’s roof, which was covered with straw and mud.
Panic ensued among the children as they rushed towards the exits—two narrow doors that only opened inwards. Tragically, 282 children aged between eight and fourteen lost their lives in the blaze. Despite being warned about the lack of safety measures at the cinema, the regime authorities chose to proceed with the screenings. This disaster has never been properly investigated.

Supporting Women in NE Syria through Sewing Training
Supporting Women through Sewing Training: The Roj Women’s Association is committed to supporting displaced women by providing vocational training and practical tools for empowerment.
As part of this mission, our organisation will send sewing machines to Newroz Camp in NE Syria, where women are participating in a sewing training project. These machines will enable them to practice their new skills, produce clothing and other items, and take important steps toward economic independence. Through this initiative, the Roj Women’s Association aims to give women in Newroz Camp not only vocational skills, but also hope, dignity, and the chance for a better future.
